Traveler Expert Review: Sommerro

Our summary of verified traveler experiences.

Sommerro, a distinguished Michelin One-Key property in Oslo, Norway, has rapidly established itself as a premier luxury destination, drawing praise for its stunning Art Deco design, exceptional amenities, and vibrant atmosphere. Housed in the meticulously restored 1930s headquarters of Oslo's former electricity company, the hotel seamlessly blends historical grandeur with modern comforts.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

Sommerro consistently garners "Superb" ratings, with guest reviews often scoring it between 9.0/10 and 9.3/10 for cleanliness, service, and comfort. The overall sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, with many guests considering it one of the best hotels in Oslo and a truly memorable experience. It's celebrated for its bold style, distinctive character, and unique blend of Norwegian history and contemporary luxury.

2. Key Highlights

Guests frequently highlight Sommerro's breathtaking Art Deco design, which extends from the lobby through the common areas, corridors, and rooms. The hotel's extensive wellness area, Vestkantbadet, is a major draw, featuring Oslo's first year-round heated rooftop pool, a sauna with panoramic city views, an infrared sauna, cold plunge pool, and a beautifully restored 1932-vintage public bath. The diverse range of on-site dining options and bars, along with the attentive and professional staff, are also consistently praised.

3. Room Quality

Sommerro offers 231 rooms and suites, ranging from compact Loft Rooms to spacious Heritage Suites and apartment-like Residences. Rooms are sumptuously decorated in a refined Art Deco style with a Nordic flair, featuring oak parquet floors, bespoke furnishings, and rich period details. Guests appreciate the exceptionally comfortable beds with plush duvets, high-end Byredo bath products, Nespresso coffee machines, and thoughtful technological embellishments like make-up specific lighting and button-operated blinds. While most rooms are described as spacious, some smaller room types have been noted as potentially crowded for two people.

4. Dining Experience

Sommerro is a culinary destination with six restaurants and two bars. The all-day brasserie, Ekspedisjonshallen, located in the former power company's canteen, is a centerpiece, offering a generous buffet breakfast with local produce, freshly pressed juices, and made-to-order hot dishes, often accompanied by live jazz music. Breakfast is consistently rated as outstanding in quality and choice. Other notable dining options include Tak Oslo, a Nordic-Japanese fusion restaurant on the rooftop by chef Frida Ronge, and Izakaya Bar & Terrace for informal street food and cocktails. Plah offers a Thai-Norwegian hybrid cuisine.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Sommerro is widely regarded as excellent, professional, proactive, and accommodating. Guests describe the staff as genuinely friendly, helpful, and efficient, contributing significantly to a positive stay. Many reviews commend the personalized attention and the staff's eagerness to share recommendations.

6. Location & Accessibility

Situated in Frogner, one of Oslo's oldest, most central, and elegant neighborhoods, Sommerro offers an ideal base for exploring the city. It's within walking distance of major attractions such as the Royal Palace, National Library, Slottsparken, Frogner Park, Aker Brygge, and the National Museum. Public transportation is highly convenient, with tram and bus stops directly outside the hotel and Nationaltheatret train station (offering direct airport express train access) just a short walk away.

7. Value & Pricing

Sommerro is considered a 5-star luxury hotel, and guests generally rate its value for money as "Great" (8.3/10). Room prices typically start from approximately US$231 to US$321, varying by dates and room type. While a luxury experience, many guests feel the quality of the facilities, service, and unique design justifies the cost.

8. Common Complaints

Some recurring issues include noise in common areas due to additional events hosted at the hotel, which can make the atmosphere feel less peaceful and busy with non-hotel guests. A notable point of contention for some guests is the policy requiring an additional daily charge and pre-booked time slots for using the swimming pools, even for those staying at the hotel. This policy has been described as a "disappointment" and gives some guests "a cheap feeling." Additionally, securing spa appointments often requires booking well in advance.

Amazing art deco hotel (in an old electric company building). Tastefully refurbished and decorated, room was comfortable if a bit small. There is a heated pool and saunas - don't miss them during your visit!! The restaurant was also an impressive space, with a large, delicious breakfast on offer. We also had dinner on Christmas day - also very tasty and the live music was a good accompaniment, nev...

Junior suite at 700 euro a night. Feels a bit overpriced although no real faults of any sorts. Bed is great. Location is convenient. Staff is very friendly. The best part is the breakfast. It's literally the best breakfast I've ever seen served.

We had complimentary breakfast delivered to our room, used the rooftop spa facilities at sunset, and a nice steak dinner at ekspedisjonshallen. The bed and sheets were quite comfortable, and the amenities in the room really elevated the experience. Very much reminiscent of vintage hospitality w...

Great experience of the hotel. Prompt services and clean. Quiet on the surrounding and walk way. Nice bars and resturants in the hotel. Good distance walk to akker breyygre and Oslo city (around 15 mins) Nationalthreate train station is just 5 mins walk away. Cost is higher but worth if just staying for couple of days.😀

This is definitely the place to stay in Oslo. Rooms are well designed and appointed. Hotel has a ton of on site amenities: multiple solid F&B options, excellent gym and spa (with sauna and cold plunge). Nice touches and flourishes. Included breakfast is excellent. Cool events like a local members club type programming as well
